Beware the Penguins

Today’s comic is not open source… yet. DVD Review: Insomnia (R) I wanted to see this movie because it was directed by Christopher Nolan, who also directed Memento (one of my favorite films ever). Insomnia is the story of an L.A. detective, played by Al Pacino, who goes to Alaska to investigate a murder. The sun is always up and he doesn’t get any sleep for days. This wasn’t the typical crime drama I was expecting. There were a couple of twists and turns that kept it interesting. It wasn’t as fast paced and psychological as Memento but it was still an ok movie. The special features inlcude a couple behind the scenes documentaries and a director’s commentary. On my DVD scale of Buy it, Rent it, Avoid it, I’d say if you are a Memento fan or really like crime dramas rent it, otherwise you might want to avoid it because there are a lot of better movies out there. Afterthoughts: I posted my review of Beach Spikers today but then I made another observation. When playing World Mode, in the middle of each match you get a couple of chances to give feedback to your partner. You can choose praise, encourage, reprimand, or nothing. This will increase or decrease your teamwork rating. However, sometimes praise or encouragment just pisses off your partner and decreases your rating. At first I thought that was strange but then I realized the characters are women. Sega has somehow perfectly simulated the female mind! It doesn’t matter what you say because in the end their response is going to be completely random. Sega scores one point for realism. Continue reading "Beware the Penguins"

"Thank goodness it’s Friday" is annoying, yet accurate

There is a new comic today. Yes, really. I’ve started trying to create my own DWI files. I found a program that makes it really easy called XStep. As soon as I get a song done I will put it in the downloads section. DVD Review: Vulgar (Not Rated) Vulgar is a View Askew production but it is not a true “Kevin Smith” movie. It was written and directed by Bryan Johnson (who plays Steve-Dave in all the other Kevin Smith movies). This dark comedy turns out to be way more dark than comedic. It is the story of a clown played by Brian O’Halloran (Dante in Clerks) who is sexually assulted. Later he becomes a TV star but his past comes back to haunt him. Johnson and O’Halloran attempt to recreate the banter that Dante and Randal had in Clerks but fall short. The comedic elements in the movie are not enough to take your mind off the disturbing attack scene. I’d say the attack scene would turn most people off on this movie. I didn’t mind the scene but my only enjoyment from the movie came from seeing other View Askew actors (like Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes) show up in cameo roles. If you aren’t a View Askew fan or don’t know Kevin Smith I can’t think of any reason to watch this movie. This DVD does have some cool special features. The commentary track with Johnson, Smith, Scott Mosier, O’Halloran and Monica Hampton is more entertaining than the movie itself. There is also a documentary in defense of Dogma that didn’t make it on to the Dogma DVD. The documentary just basically talks about the controversy surrounding Dogma and doesn’t really provide any new information that a View Askew fan wouldn’t already know. On my DVD scale of Buy it, Rent it, Avoid it, I would say if you are a View Askew fan rent it. If you’re not avoid this movie. FINISH HIM!

Sometimes I base comics on events in my life, then there’s today’s comic. I had the typical holiday: presents, food, battle for world domination. K-Dog, Goz and I played a cuthroat game of Risk. Goz won, but fortunatly this was “Lord of the Rings” Risk which means Goz currently only reigns over Middle Earth and not this planet. K-Dog finally got an XBOX. We played co-op on Serious Sam and it was a lot of fun. Lastly, I got a chance to check out a couple of really cool cartoons this week. The first is Undergrads. It is awesome. I think it does a good job of depicting college life from a geek’s point of view. You should definately check it out on Comedy Central. The other cartoon was Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I can’t describe how messed up this cartoon is. It is on Cartoon Network Adult Swim. Continue reading "FINISH HIM!"

This job would be great if it weren’t for the customers

Today’s comic is a true story. If you are wondering what I am singing in the comic you have to check out Homestar Runner. I know there are hundreds of cartoons on the web but I don’t normally search them out. Kruton and CoachDave showed me this site and it is hilarious. Continue reading "This job would be great if it weren’t for the customers"

Kruton has a PhD in DDR.

As mentioned in today’s comic kruton won the DDR tournament last weekend. It was a close match between him and BIL, the guy who beat my high score on basic double. He’s a cool guy though and I’m glad he got second. I have to say this was the closest tournament I’ve ever seen. There were about 4 or 5 rounds where a person won by only a few perfects. All in all it was a good time and I think its going to become a monthly event in Findlay. I’ve also been playing a lot of MotoGP on Xbox Live and I have to say I’m impressed with how easy it is to get into a game. I’ve met a lot of cool people online to play against. The game itself it somewhat difficult and it takes awhile to get use to controlling a motorcycle. My Project Gotham skills didn’t transfer over to this game. CinciClassic – Part 3

Today’s comic is the final chapter of CinciClassic. The Microsoft fairy came and left 2 new beta games under my pillow. Even in my drowsy stupor the Microsoft fairy looked a lot like the UPS guy. The two games I got are demo versions of MotoGP and Whacked. I assume these demos will be included in the Xbox Live starter kit. MotoGP is the best motorcycle racing game I’ve played since… what was the last motorcycle game I’ve played? Super Hang On maybe. Ok, so this game is better than Super Hang On. Whacked on the other hand was obviously thought up by a guy who lives in my toilet, collecting my poop and turning it into video games. I thought he had learned his lesson when he came up with BloodWake and I beat him repeatedly with a plunger, but I guess not. Continue reading "CinciClassic – Part 3"
