I got my 1K on Iron Man last night. The most frustrating part was I was stuck on level 7 on the hardest difficulty for a few hours. It was disappointing as I could have been gaining achievements in any other game but no, I wanted the last 150 GS from beating on formidable (the hardest difficulty). I found that the classic red/yellow suit and the hulkbuster were the best for a variety of different levels. When you play easy the game just lets you walk over it. No looking before you leap just simply run and gun. The game reminded me much of Blast Corps for the N64 (don’t get me wrong NOTHING can compare to that game it was simply AMAZING!) except with unlimited bullets and missiles as I just pretty much blew up anything that moved in each level and when they said “you weren’t supposed to kill those civilians” I just replayed the level and blasted everything but them!
I’ve got to hand it to the game. It made me hate it [and Sega]. I was reminded of Monkey Ball style missions where if you make the wrong move it laughed and said “Haha you’re dead start all over loser!” I have to give props to World Series of Poker 2008 for keeping me sane while I tried to beat the stupid artic level as right before I’d want to throw my controller at the screen I’d stick that game in for awhile and continue my “Battle for the bracelets” as the game touts.
So what’s it all mean? I think I would give Iron Man a 7.5 out of 10 for what it was worth. The main game on Easy is awesome! It’s a very arcadey style of gameplay that I enjoyed last time from State of Emergency. There were a few flaws like missing a grab for a missile results in a rocket to the face which on Formidible you can take about 3 of those on average from all the suits. The game is well designed and functions properly unless you’re trying to walk without firing where the game has Iron Man constantly moonwalking around the screen as the rockets pulverise you. No lock on system prior to firing your weapon was a bit of a pain but overall I enjoyed he game… unlike King Kong.
So last night I was thinking about the fact that I needed another game to relax me from Iron Man. Then I started thinking that I’m not really just playing one game at any given time for achievements. This past weekend I played rock band with Seal and Chase, Guitar Hero with Mike about 2 weeks ago, Lego Indy with Kim, Army of Two with Trimmer and WSOP 2008 when I couldn’t take any more Iron Man.
I guess it breaks down to this:
1K goal: Shrek the 3rd
Long Term: WSOP 2008
Co-op: Lego Indy
For fun: Soul Calibur 4 (yea it comes out today and I’m actually excited.)

It’s so refreshing that Mr. Kruton has returned to the Bitsmack site with semi-regular messages/ramblings.
I have absolutely no idea what this post is about, but it doesn’t detract from the beauty. It’s like abstract art, where there are colors and shapes, but it doesn’t *look* like anything. Here K-dogg uses words, punctuation and sentences, but they don’t actually *mean* anything. Truly inspired.
Also, what’s with the Monkey Ball hate?
Monkey Ball 1 = perfect
Monkey Ball 2 = they screwed up monkey target and some of the levels in single player mode are so ridiculously hard you can only solve them by luck and not skill
OK, now my curiosity has been piqued… which Monkey Ball 2 levels are “ridiculously hard”?
Yes, there are some extremely challenging levels, to be sure… but I’m proud to say that I’ve completed all 100 levels in Story Mode at least a half-dozen times. (My kid really likes SMB2, and so he implores me to play it, and I’m of course happy to oblige.)
I’ll have to find SMB1 in a bargain bin sometime, and compare the two.
BTW, I recently managed to find Super Monkey Ball Jr for the GBA. It is an amazingly faithful version of the game. I highly recommend it.
Also, we recently rented Banana Blitz, and I thought it was the biggest abomination… an insult to the SMB heritage. Feh!
You know, we ought to implement some kind of video game review system here on Bitsmack. We all seem to be gamer enthusiasts, and we could share our thoughts and insights. Kinda like Moby Games, but more better.
I had to do some research since I haven’t played SMB2 in awhile. Let’s start with 4.6 Launchers, which has nothing to do with rolling/balance skills, it’s mostly luck. And then there is 4-10 Arthropod. This level was clearly designed by a person who hates video games and wants to punish the people who play them.
Also, Bitsmack started out as a video game site for new and old video games. However, not a lot of people contributed to it and it became a huge chore to update with new games so I did away with that when I moved to Wordpress.
Thanks for the SMB2 info.
Launchers is not entirely luck… you can control your ball while in flight. The trick is to watch the overhead cam in the lower right so you can line up with the platform.
Arthropod is cake once you know the trick: wait until the timer gets to 40.5 seconds. You’ve got to time it so that the instant you’re at 40.5, you’re pushing full speed forward. Don’t wait for your brain to see 41, then 40 and then react… timing here is crucial. You must anticipate 40.5 and be moving forward at precisely that moment. Then, there is some luck involved, yes, but you’ll get through in just a few tries. The hard part is waiting 20 seconds every time.
I’m proud to say that there were only two levels out of the 100 in Story Mode where I had to find a FAQ/walkthrough. Are there any other levels you need help with?
And yes, I know Bitsmack started out as a video game site. I’ve been following along with you since 2003. Suggesting video games reviews was me being snarky, and a subtle protest for your having removed the reviews. Next time I’ll be sure to put one of those internet smileys in my smart-ass posts.
Yeah see, when the strategy for the level involves “looking up GameFAQs to find out the exact second to move” that’s when it’s no longer about how skillfully you can move your monkey ball. I don’t mind challenging levels, I just don’t like the ones that rely on luck and repetition than anything else.
That being said, all this talk has made me want to get out SMB 1 and 2 again.
